ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My vibrant, realistic acrylic paintings share spiritual signs that Love is who I really am, and that love is all around me, even through the most painful of times. I paint to stay focused on glimmers of beauty, comfort and peace that give me inspiration and encouragement and remind me that I am divinely cared for.

Based mostly on my own photos of nature and everyday moments, my pieces are inspired by personal experiences as well as mystic poetry and teachings. Each work of art is an invitation to notice the gifts in our experiences and to feel, hear and see the messages around us that our hearts most need.

BIO
Laura Higgins has been painting in acrylics since 1988. The death of her beloved sister Kerry, in 1999, was a turning point in Laura's artistic journey. Painting scenes of hope, grace and light was one of the ways she helped herself to move through immense grief.
From that time forward, her art has been a vehicle for seeking and expressing comfort, inspiration, hope and joy in a world that has so many ups and downs beyond her control. Taking photos and making paintings from those photos helps her to notice the beauty alongside the pain and to remember that love is right here, closer than we think.

Laura's technique is nearly all self-taught, however she enjoyed learning more about how to express meaning in her work through painting classes at York. Her academic study of literature, as well as many years of crafting prose, poetry and ceremonies, cultivated a love for using symbolism and metaphor in her paintings and sharing that meaning with others.
Her work can be found in private, public and corporate collections in North America and the U.K.
Laura lives in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada with her family. She is grateful to be one of the founding members of the Newmarket Group of Artists. Meditation, writing, nature walks and photography are some of her other joys in life.
