©Laura Higgins 2017 Acrylic on Canvas 16" x 20" Private Collection Based on photos I took of my Nana's home when we knew it needed to be sold, I started this painting in the early months of 2016 but didn't finish it until months later, after her death. The light beyond the door became a metaphor for what I imagined to be her journey beyond this life and for hope in a benevolent Love that would embrace her. More recently, it took on an added meaning when I decided to step whole-heartedly back into my art career in 2020. While my other career pursuits are meaningful, being an artist is what lights me up the most, and prioritizing everything else in my life above art-making has come at a cost. I am my best self when I am creating an image that has meaning - an image that helps me to find the beauty alongside the pain, to see the sacredness of life. It keeps me healthy. And that means I can bring my best to my self, my family, my friends, my community and my world and inspire others with these images of hope and resilience. For too long the door has been closed or barely ajar. I’ve now opened it fully. I’ve stepped through, and I'm basking in the light. Care to join me? What connects you to your best, highest self?
